Since my first year of teaching in 2004 I have worked very hard on improving my skills and broadening my knowledge about teaching. As a graduate student at a university in the USA, I taught German Language classes to undergraduate students, co-presented a research project about teaching German through culture at a state-wide language conference in 2005 and about group work in the language classroom in 2006, worked for the German Outreach Program and taught the undergraduate seminar 'Teaching German to Young Children'. I did my masters thesis on comparing two communicative grammar teaching approaches and I evaluated their effectiveness for the acquisition of two grammatical features of German.
gERMANY & brAZIL
During my last year of studies at university in Germany, I was working as a tutor for the Department of English and American Literature and as a tutor and lecturer for the Department of English Linguistics.
After the completion of my degree and having continued to work as a lecturer for applied linguistics and second language acquisition at the university, I went to Brazil to teach EFL at a language institute and I gave private tuition in German and EFL. After my return to Germany, I started teaching English/EFL at a private secondary school. In addition to teaching classes from year 5 to year 10, I also prepared students for the Abitur (= German school leaving and university entrance qualification / A-Level or IB equivalent). I became Head of the Bilingual Department setting up a successful bilingual (English/German) track which made this secondary school the first non-international school in Germany to offer English language instruction in several subjects from year 5. At the same school I also gained extensive experience with SEN as it was an inclusive school and several students had learning disabilities ranging from ADHD to Autism. |
The United Kingdom
I have been teaching German and English as an Additional Language (EAL) at a prestigious independent day and boarding school in the UK.
As a German teacher I have taught most year groups and I have also prepared Year 12 and Year 13 Pre-U and IB German students in 1-2-1 lessons for their oral exam and supported small groups of students in their preparation for the German GCSE. As an EAL teacher I prepared university applicants, some of whom went on to study at Oxford and Cambridge, for the IELTS test. I taught small classes with an average of no more than 3 students. Most of my EAL lessons consisted of 1-2-1 tuition of international students from Japan, China, Hong Kong, Costa Rica, Russia and the Ukraine. |
